[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [See also Group XXIX] In automatic stop and like apparatus for machines for operating upon roving, yarns, threads, fine wire and the like, especially preparatory machines such as drawing-frames, in which absence or variation in size of the material effects a variation in the pressure of fluid in a chamber by permitting escape of the fluid, an obturating device such as a valve 11, Fig. 1, opens an orifice 4 in a pressure chamber 1 when released by a defect in the material and lowers the pressure, whereby a part, such as a diaphragm 7 or a piston, operates an electric or pneumatic relay through a control member 9 to effect stoppage of the machine or the actuation of a signal. The material 13 may itself serve to obturate the orifice 4 as shown in Fig. 3, and this arrangement is suitable for operation in the event of reduction in section ; a single detector may serve for a single thread or two threads or for a part of a roving. Any other manometric device may be used in place of the diaphragm 7 ; for example a U-tube containing conducting liquid may co-operate with contacts connected to control-mechanism. Fluid under pressure may be supplied to each side of the diaphragm 7 from the same source, so that variations in the supply pressure are ineffective. Separate pressure chambers may be provided for groups of threads, and a lamp or other signal controlled by the detectors 9 may be provided for each group to facilitate the finding of the broken end. As shown in Fig. 8, the control 9 serves to earth the primary 23 of a transformer of which the secondary 27 is connected in opposition to the secondary 28 of another transformer 25, 28 whereby an electromagnet 30 fed through a rectifier 29 is deenergized and the clutch lever 32 of the machine operated by a weight 33. The controls 9 may be arranged in series with a feed circuit of a. transformer, operation of the controls serving to interrupt the feed. A pneumatic relay is shown in Fig. 10, reduction of pressure in the chamber 1 serving to open a valve 34 in a chamber 37<1> whereby the pressure below a piston 36 is reduced and the clutch lever 32 operated.
