Abstract
Emulsions are made by agitating together a water-insoluble material liquid under the conditions of emulsification and an aqueous solution of a salt of deacetylated chitin or deacetylated chondroitin such as may be made as described in Specification 458,839, [Group IV]. Suitable materials are linseed oil, china wood oil and castor oil which may be blown or hydrogenated; waxes or wax mixtures such as paraffin, carnauba and beeswax; lubricating oils, petroleum jelly, neat's foot oil, spindle oil; triacetin, dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate and methoxyethyl adipate; stearic acid, stearyl alcohol; dichlorodiethyl ether-diphenylolpropane resins and methyl methacrylate resins. If desired, the materials may be dissolved in a non-reactive volatile liquid such as benzene, naphtha or ethyl acetate. Silk, wool, cotton, linen, rayon, paper, rubber, leather, cork, wood, plaster, brick, glass, tile, metal, concrete, asbestos, wall-board and lacquered, painted, varnished or enamelled surfaces may be coated or impregnated with the emulsions. After application the treated material may be dried or treated with insolubilizing agents such as formaldehyde, acetic anhydride or acetyl chloride. The emulsions may also be applied to nitrocellulose-coated fabric and linoleum. Specification 458,815 also is referred to.
