[Class 92 (ii)] Drum magazines of the Lewis type have the cartridges arranged in the annulus x, Fig. 2, in non-radial manner so that the cartridges rest directly against one another, the intersections of the centre lines of successive pairs of cartridges lying at a constant radius from the drum centre. With rimmed cartridges, the rims overlap in the manner shown and the outermost points of the rims contact with the inner periphery of the drum E<3>. The cartridges, propelled by spring-pressed arms D<2>, enter the magazine between a fixed lip F<1>, Fig. 3, and a lip F<2> hinged at F<3> and pressed against the leading cartridge E<x> by a spring f<3>. The hinged lip engages the cartridge Ex by a recess F<5> and an extension F<6> of the lip prevents the feed of the next cartridge E<0>. When the cartridge E<x> is withdrawn into the gun, the lip is moved by the spring f<3> to allow the cartridge E<0> to fall and to retain the succeeding one. The lip carries a spring-pressed pawl H for pressing down the bullet end of the cartridge.
