458,390. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Feb. 13, 1936, No. 4383. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1935. [Class 38 (iii)] Combination of resistances.-The starting resistance for a vehicle motor 1 comprises two approximately equal parts 3, 4, which are initially connected in series and in series with the motor by the closure of switches 5 and 7. By operation of a controller, switches 8-16 are closed in sequence to remove the subdivided resistance part 3 in steps, each switch being opened in turn after the next in the sequence has closed. When the switch 16 has been closed, the switch 5 is opened and a switch 6 closed, so that the full subdivided resistance part 3 is substituted for the undivided resistance part 4. The controller is then operated to close the switches 15-7 again ; the subdivided resistance part 3 being again removed in steps but in the opposite sequence. The controller may be operated in one direction by compressed air or magnetic means, and during this movement energy may be stored in suitable means for operating the controller in the reverse direction.
