Abstract

Glyoxal semi-acetals are produced by oxidizing compounds having the grouping <FORM:0458000/IV/1> where R is a hydrocarbon radicle, preferably alkyl or aralkyl, by means of an oxidizing agent suitable for splitting a -glycols, such as lead tetra - acetate. In an example, glycerol aldehyde-diethyl acetal in benzene is mixed with lead tetra-acetate, the lead salt being filtered off after 2 hours and the benzene being distilled off together with formaldehyde and acetic acid. The residue is dissolved in ether, acid being neutralized with potassium carbonate, and the ethereal solution is then dried with sodium sulphate and distilled. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes an example in which the tetra-ethyl acetal of dioxy-succinic-dialdehyde is treated as described above, two equivalents of the glyoxal semi-acetal being formed without by-products. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
