Abstract

As wax-substitutes in non-cellulosic polishing or coating compositions, use is made of amides of fatty acids containing at least eight carbon atoms, the amides being substituted on the nitrogen atom by an alkyl group of at least twelve carbon atoms. Suitable amides are obtainable from palmitic, stearic, arachidic, montanic or behenic acid or mixtures thereof by treating the acids, or their anhydrides or halides, with a primary or secondary aliphatic amine containing an alkyl group of at least twelve carbon atoms, e.g. cetylamine, octadecylamine, docosylamine, dilaurylamine, or methylheptadecylamine; the reaction may be effected in the presence or absence of an inert diluent and an acid-binding agent. The amides may be taken as such or mixed with natural waxes or wax-like substances; use may accordingly be made of the products obtained by heating a wax containing free acid with an aliphatic amine as specified above, or of the products obtained by saponifying a natural wax or a hydrogenated natural wax, e.g. hydrogenated sperm oil, and heating the resulting mixture of acid and alcohol with an aliphatic amine as specified above. Specified types of composition in which the amides may be used are non-cellulosic shoe creams and polishes, coating compositions for permanent stencils, colouring compositions for copying and carbon papers, and textile finishing or dressing compositions. In the examples: (1) a mixture of palmitic and stearic acids (or montanic acid) is heated with a mixture of hexadecylamine and octadecylamine to yield an amide mixture which is compatible with turpentine oils and other oils and may be used in the manufacture of shoe creams; (2) arachidic acid chloride is heated with docosylamine in the presence of xylene and pyridine. Specification 414,336 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes examples in which (1) a -oxystearic acid (hydrogenated castor oil acid) (sic) is heated with dodecylamine; (2) bleached montanic acid is heated with docosylamine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:As wax substitutes in non-cellulosic polishing-compositions, use is made of amides of fatty acids containing at least eight carbon atoms, the amides being substituted on the nitrogen atom by an alkyl group of at least twelve carbon atoms. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
