Abstract
457,598. Lifeboats. MASON, R. T. G., 122, Tintern Avenue, Westcliff-on-Sea. June 3, 1936, No. 15531. [Classes 113 (i) and 113 (ii)] Lifeboats comprise an outer shell within which a passenger compartment is mounted on a gimbal ring coupling device. The spherical passenger compartment comprising a metal framework enclosed by steel netting is mounted on trunnions to a ring 22 which in turn is trunnioned to the outer spherical casing 1. The movement of the passenger compartment is adjustably limited by a cable 64 which at one end is connected to the shell through the shock absorber 69. The other end of the cable is connected to a feed-screw which may be adjusted by the hand wheel 68. The relative movement of the two spheres is also employed to operate pumps 73 through the cable 73b which extract bilge water out of the ballast chamber. The passenger chamber is provided with sliding entrance doors which carry rollers 30, 33 working on suitable guides and are locked in closed position by gravity hasps 38, 39 which engage with a hasp-plate 35. The hasps are released by the bolts 38b, 39b. The aligned door 9 in the outer shell is mounted on the arm 11 which is pivoted at 10 to the door and at 12 to the shell. The door is provided with packing and is centred by the wedgeshaped seating. The outer casing is provided at its side with ventilators 43, the exit of which is guarded by labyrinth baffles 45. The ventilator is further provided with the adjustable dampers 47 and drainage holes 46. A ventilator provided at the top of the boat comprises a rotatable cowl 49 with an interior damper 54 controlling the exit 53.
