Abstract
740,174. Flying boat hulls. SAUNDERSROE, Ltd. Sept. 20, 1950 [Oct. 12, 1949], No. 26217/49. Class 4. [Also in Group XXI] In the hull of a flying boat there is provided a water-tight trunk 32 which is open at the bottom but can be closed by a motor - operated non-water-tight flexible door 16, as described in Specification 543,232. Inside the trunk a framework 11, sliding on guides 12, carries an object 10, e.g. a radar aerial, a searchlight or bomb - dropping device, which is rotatable through 90 degrees by the jack 21 when the object is to be withdrawn into the trunk. Ducts having clack valves are provided in the lower sides of the trunk so that the water in the trunk may drain away quickly when the flying boat takes off. The trunk is best situated aft of the main step at a position given by the formula where X=distance between main step centroid and the centre of the trunk, La=length of hull afterbody, L=overall planing length of hull, b=maximum chine beam.
