Abstract
457,254. Compression resistances. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO., Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A. April 7, 1936, No. 10217. Convention date, Aug. 13, 1935. [Class 37] A carbon compression rheostat has the resistance stacks 12 operated through springs 15, 17 and in order to effect a mechanical pressure more in accordance with the characteristic current curve the compression rod 16 is provided with an adjustable nut 161 connected to a spring - tensioned lever 21 pivoted on a base - plate 24. Springs 27 are anchored on a cross-bar 26 carried by the lever 21 and are adjustably connected to horns 28 upstanding from the plate 24. The springs 27 have a decreasing recovery effect on the lever 21 throughout its electrical resistance-decreasing motion, and balance the mechanical resistance of springs 15, 17 and 18. A bifurcated pedal 30 engages the crossbar 26, or, in a modification, a pull-block straddles the lever 21. The casing parts A, B are moulded from phenolic condensation materials, and a foot rest is provided. The electrical conductors are secured by serrated parts 40 of the casing.
