Abstract

457,048. Transmitting-mechanism for brakes. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S., King's Road, Tyseley, Birmingham. June 6, 1935, No. 16411. [Class 103(i)] In equalizing or compensating mechanism for vehicle brakes of the kind in which two brakes or sets of brakes are applied through rods connected to opposed lever arms projecting from a member which is turned by the pedal &c., and is free to swing about one end, the lever arms are carried or formed on one or more members which are rotatable in a bore in the compensator about an axis at right angles to the plane of swing of the compensator to accommodate variations of the angle between the rods and the compensator due to the swing of the compensator. The arrangement may also permit adjustment of the relative lengths of the lever arms to vary the relative leverage. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the member a which is adapted to be turned about its longitudinal axis to apply the brakes is free to swing about its upper end in the plane of the paper and the lever arms are formed by a member f which is free to turn in the head g of the member a by being screwed therein. The brake rods extend to the right and left hand respectively from pivots f<1>. By screwing the member f more or less into the head g after detaching the rods, the relative lengths of the arms can be adjusted. The two arms may be permitted independent turning movement with respect to the head by forming one of them as a socket into which the other screws. In another form, the member f may have a plain bearing in the head g and be held against axial movement by a set pin engaging a groove in the member, or there may be a number of grooves to allow of adjustment of the length of the arms.
