Abstract

456,883. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc., 366, Broadway, New York City, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Page, A. E.; Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) June 22, 1936, No. 17324. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1935. [Class 74 (ii)] Relates to needle protectors for detecting " load-ups," broken or defective needles, misplaced sinkers, &c. The invention is described as applied to machines for knitting plated rib and plain fabrics and having selected cylinder needles moved backwards for reverse plating. A bolt or pin 30 mounted in a base B has journalled thereon a sleeve 32, the upper portion of which is enlarged at 32a, to form a support for a cam plate 34 pivotally mounted on an extension 32b. The extension is divided vertically and the slot thus provided is enlarged at one point to receive a sleeve 36, clamped by a screw 38. The sleeve is cut away to provide a tapering downwardly bent end 36a. A spring urged detector 40, having a number of operative positions, is supported within the sleeve. One end 40a is tapered and may engage fabric or broken &c. needles according to its position. The downwardly bent other end 40b engages an eye 42, secured in an opening in the extension 32b by a set screw 43. Adjustably secured to the plate 34 by set screws 48 is a cam 50, the cam surface 50a of which is arranged to engage with the finger 40b as the plate 34 is rotated. A spring 52 tends to hold the surface 50a out of contact with the finger 40b. A link 54 is connected at one end to the plate 34 ; the other end passes through the upper end of a lever 39 pivoted at 61. A collar 55 ensures operation of the link to bring the cam 50 against the finger 40b upon movement of the lever 39 in one direction. As the cams on the main or other pattern drum 120 come beneath the lower end of the lever 39, the upper end engages the collar 55 and shifts the link 54. The cam plate 34 and cam 50 are thus rotated to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the detector 40 is moved forward. Release of the lever 39 by the cams on the drum 120 permits the spring 52 to return the parts 34, 50 and 40. An arm 60 on the sleeve 32 is connected by a chain 66 to a lever 68 the free end of which is engaged by a pattern controlled push rod 460. When a cam raises the push rod, the detector 40 occupies the position shown in full lines and when the push rod is lowered the detector returns to position I. A lever 80 connected to machine stopping gear 82 is engaged by an extension 62 of the arm 66 when a detector is deflected to position II by engagement with a broken or defective needle or with loops which have abnormally accumulated on a needle. During the knitting of rib fabric and plain fabric by round and round knitting, the push rod 460 is raised, and the detector brought to the operative position shown in full lines. During reciprocating knitting, the detector is left in its inoperative position I. During rib knitting, the cam 50 is out of action and the detector is moved by its spring 44 into position for engaging loops which " load up " on the needles. During plain knitting, the cam 50 is in action and the detector is projected forwardly in position to engage broken &c. needles. The lip 36a of the sleeve engages broken sinkers W<1>, or the spring band w<60>, should it become slack. Specifications 196,124 and 281,613, [both in Class 74 (ii)], are referred to.
