Abstract

456,819. Cooling cylinders. TOWNEND, H. C. H., National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex. May 13, 1935, No. 14041. [Class 7 (ii)] Means for maintaining two stationary vortices at the rear of an aircraft engine cylinder, and thus causing a forwardly - directed jet of air to impinge on the back of the cylinder, to improve the cooling thereof, comprises (a) two circulators 3, or (b) a central flat plate 10 extending from a rear fairing 4 towards the cylinder. The circulators 3 should correspond in cross-section to the stationary vortices formed at low Reynolds numbers, but one may be omitted. The inner surfaces 5 of the fairing also should correspond with the vortices, and adjustable baffles 6 may be provided. The circulators may be mounted to be rotated by the air flow, or be power driven ; they may accommodate the valve-gear push-rods, or be utilized as induction pipes, in which case ribs may be provided so that they act as heaters for the mixture. Alternatively, the induction pipes are placed in the fairing 4. To stabilize the vortices, ribs 9, which may be fluted, or other small obstructions, e.g. rods, may be attached to saw-cuts in the cylinder ribs at the break-away points of the vortices. Saw-cuts may also be made in the cylinder ribs to produce turbulent flow of the cooling air. In a two-row engine, the invention is applied only to the cylinders in the rear row. The fairing 4 may have a flat top and curved sides faired into the nose of the aeroplane.
