Abstract

493,673. Ducted radiator for aircraft. JUNKERS FLUGZEUG - UND - MOTORENWERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 14, 1937, No. 34583. Convention date, Dec. 22,1936. [Class 4] An annular radiator for an aero engine is disposed around the cowling of the engine to be cooled, which cowling is approximately a solid of revolution and tapers uniformly toward the front, and is surrounded by a shell which with the cowling defines an annular air inlet opening and a convergent annular outlet such that the issuing cooling air flows smoothly along the cowling. In one form, Fig. 1, a radiator 3 and an oil cooler 4 are located between engine 1 and airscrew 2. Radiator 3 is mounted either on cowling 6 or on a ring 7, as shown, braced to the fuselage by members 15, Fig. 3, casing 5 is in the form of a hollow ring of which the outer surface conforms to the streamline shape of the cowling. The inner surface 9 of the casing in conjunction with the forward constriction 10 of the cowling forms an annular nozzle 11, the area of which is adjustable by axial movement of a sleeve 14 on the cowling or, according to a modification, by axial movement of the housing itself. Alternatively, the trailing edge of the housing may comprise adjustable hinged louvres. The front boundary of housing 5 is inturned at 12, the inner front edge of the radiator is also curled at 13. Radiator 3 is divided into two sectors 16, 17, Fig. 2, secured on ring 7 with a rubber sleeve 20, Fig. 3, interposed, by clamping rings. Each sector comprises a header 22 and an outflow collector 24. The air passing through oil cooler 4 escapes from the cowling through gills 28 provided with louvres 29, Fig. 1. Cooler 4 is also divided into two sectors held in position by straps, the plane of division of the two sectors being staggered with respect to that of sectors 16, 17. Both radiator and cooler comprises curved tubes for the liquid to be cooled and radial fins 48 which are bent on the intake side in such manner that they run approximately tangentially to the direction of the movement of the airscrew slipstream. In a modification, an oil cooler and a radiator, both of sectoral shape, are mounted so as together to form an annulus.
