[Class 100 (i)] In web-rewinding apparatus of the kind in which the roll R is supported on two driven carrier-cylinders I, II, a web-advancing roller V or equivalent device is arranged to co-operate with the cylinder I between the slitters 4, 5 and the winding-up point adjacent to the cylinder II so as to keep the web under tension during the slitting operation and decrease the tension at the winding-up point. The roller V is pressed by springs or weights towards the cylinder I and preferably has a rubber covering. It may be replaced by endless bands. In order to regulate the web tension adjacent to the winding-up point, the drives of the roller V and cylinder I are adjustable. Preferably, the members V, I are driven at a slightly greater speed than the cylinder II so as to decrease the web tension adjacent to the cylinder II, but they may be driven at a slower speed so as to obtain a tighter winding. In order to maintain the pressure between the cylinders I, II and the roll R at a constant value as the roll increases in size, the roll spindle 9 is supported by hooks 13 on chains 12 passing over drums 20, the shaft 21 of which carries cams 22 over which pass chains 23 having counterweights 24 attached thereto. By means of handles 16 operating eccentrics in the shackles 18 connecting the chains 12 to the hooks 13, the effective support. ing force at each end of the web roll can be varied. The web may pass over the face of a suction-nozzle acting as a braking-device, prior to reaching the slitters, so that braking of the supply roll 1 is unnecessary.
