Abstract
455,894. Electrolytic production of alkaline earth metals and their alloys. COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES ALAIS, FROGES, ET CAMARGUE, 23, Rue de Balzac, Paris. April 14, 1936, No. 10710. Convention date, May 27, 1935. [Class 41] Alloys of alkaline earth metals with heavy metals are obtained by electrolysis of a fused electrolyte consisting of the oxide of the alkaline earth metal dissolved in a mixture of the chloride and the fluoride using an anode of carbon and a molten cathode of the heavy metal such as lead zinc or copper. The oxide may be replaced by the carbonate, oxalate, acetate or other compound forming the oxide on heating. The flux may consist of a 60 parts of calcium chloride to 40 parts of calcium fluoride corresponding to formation of calcium chlorofluoride, but percentages of calcium fluoride between 10 and 60 may also be employed. The alloy formed may be refined electrolytically as anode using a cooled iron cathode on which a tube of the alkaline earth metal, e.g. calcium is deposited ; the same electrolyte is suitable in this stage. Alternatively in the refining the metal may be deposited into a top cathode layer of molten aluminium or magnesium to form an alloy with these metals.
