Abstract

455,030. Torsional vibration-dampers. SANDNER, E., 5, Hohenfriedbergerstrasse, Dortmund, Germany. Jan. 9, 1935, No. 782. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 11, 1935]. [Class 108 (iii)] A torsional vibration-damper comprises a casing b secured to a shaft a and housing gearwheels c meshing with teeth on the inner side of a ring d arranged so that relative movement between the shaft and the ring forces liquid through passages e or f into chambers g or h respectively and thence through valves k. k<1> along the hollow portion of a shaft l. Liquid passes along a channel in the shaft a into the chambers g, k through valves i, i<1>, thus pro. viding a continuous circulation. The vibrating ring d is elastically connected to the casing b by hollow shafts l, m so that its natural frequency of vibration is approximately equal to that of the shaft a. The valves i, i<1>, k, kl may be replaced by throttle apertures. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3, 4, a casing n connected to the shaft a is filled with liquid and is formed with one or more radial walls p. Passages q, q<1> in the inner wall of the casing and on opposite sides of the wall p connect the annular space o to chambers r, r<1> between which is mounted a reciprocating piston s, biassed to its central position by springs t. The springs and cross-sectional areas are chosen so that the system comprising the fluid mass, the pistons and springs are turned approximately to the natural frequency of the shaft. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the piston is formed with a hollow, valved stem and in operation pumps liquid through the shaft and casing.
