Abstract
454,725. Electrically - controlled brakes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and SMART, N. C., and CHUBB, A. A., c /o General Electric Co., Ltd., Stoke, Coventry. April 24, 1935, No. 12311. [Class 103 (i)] [See also Group XXXVII] The current flowing to an induction motor ST, RO, driving a lift LC is measured during or after every start from a floor, but before deceleration, by means comprising a step-by-step-switch G which determines the degree of energization of an eddy-current or friction brake X during deceleration, the degree of energization being inversely proportional to the said current. Upon operation of a starting switch SO, the driving motor is started and accelerated to full speed, and a relay E is energized from a transformer P in accordance with the current taken by the motor. The coil of the relay E includes a resistance RG over which a wiper G1 of the step-by-step switch G is moved when the motor is started; and when the relay E is sufficiently energized it operates to interrupt the stepping circuit of the switch G which is thus positioned in accordance with the current taken by the motor. The switch G has a contact bank G6 controlling resistance RH in series with the coil of the eddy-current brake, and when the driving motor is decelerated upon approaching a floor at which it is desired to stop, the eddy-current brake is energized and, by the control of the resistance RH, to an extent which is inversely proportional to the current supplied to the motor at starting. When the lift reaches the desired floor the motor is disconnected and a holding brake K applied. The brake X may take the form of a variable friction brake.
