[Class 131] Hair is permanently waved by winding on a curler and surrounding the wound tress with bodies which simultaneously are heated to or produce a temperature of 120 to 140‹ C. and act upon the hair with a steady uniform mechanical pressure over the whole of its surface. The temperature and pressure may be obtained by the use of a selected quantity of a chemical such as lime which generates heat when treated with an appropriate liquid and increases in volume during the reaction. The chemical may be contained in a bag applied about the wound tress and lightly surrounded by a two-part casing as described in Specification 449,400. Alternatively, the bag containing the chemical may be replaced by a bag of liquid-tight elastic material through which heated oil under pressure is passed, or by a wholly closed bag containing liquid and heated by electrical resistances built into the surrounding casing which is adapted to exert a yielding pressure on the bag.
