[Class 145 (i)] [See also Group X] Cork structures, such as pads, slabs, mats, surfaces, liners, &c., for use as insulation against heat, sound or vibration and as resilient supports, are formed from a number of strip-like sections of cork wood assembled in laminations ; the strip sections B<1>, B<2>, Fig. 1, are cut from the wood A in a direction normal to the cork lines, i.e. parallel to the radial grain. The strips so obtained may be further subdivided. The strips may be arranged haphazardly, Fig. 3, or regularly, Fig. 4. The central layer may comprise strips arranged haphazardly and the outer layers and strips arranged regularly. Different-sized strips may be employed, either indiscriminately or in layers each containing pieces of approximately uniform dimensions. The voids in the surface layers may be filled in with cork dust, chips or granules ; the voids in the body of the structure may be similarly filled. The structure may comprise strip layers alternating with layers of cork dust or granules. In the manufacture the structure is subjected to heat and pressure, adhesion being secured by the natural resin in the cork or by added adhesives.
