Abstract

Vat dyes are prepared by condensation of products of the general formula <FORM:0453853/IV/1> wherein one or more of the radicles signified by X are amino groups, with halogen compounds containing at least one replaceable halogen atom, particularly those of the anthraquinone series. The products are similar to those described in Specification 410,552 and likewise may be after-treated with caustic alkalies or acid condensing agents. The aminated starting materials are prepared by nitration and reduction. In examples: (1) a monamino compound of the above formula derived by nitration and reduction is condensed with 1- and 2-chloranthraquinones, dibromdibenzanthrone (prepared by brominating dibenzanthrone), and dibromanthanthrone (see Specification 260,998, [Class 2 (iii)], examples 3 and 4); (2) a diamine compound of the foregoing formula also prepared by nitration and reduction is condensed with 1-chloro-4-benzoyl-aminoanthraquinone and monobromanthanthrone (see Specification 287,020, [Class 2 (iii)]); (3) a diamino compound prepared by condensing 1-chloranthrone with glyoxal, fusing with alcoholic potash, then with aluminium chloride, condensing with p-toluenesulphonamide and saponifying, is condensed with Bzlbrombenzanthrone; alkali-fusion of the product gives a darkbrown vat dye.
