Anon. pour les Applications de l'ElectricitÚ et des Gaz Rares, Etablissements Claude-Paz & Silva; 8, Rue Cognac-Jay, Paris) Aug. 29, 1935, No. 24182. [Class 75 (iv)] A source of light of uniform tonality comprises one or more transparent neon tubes and one or more mercury tubes the inner walls of which contain or are coated with fluorescent substances and are therefore opaque to the radiations of the neon tubes, all the tubes being arranged within a cylindrical envelope which disperses the light and is provided with means to avoid on the envelope the colour effect of the fluorescent tubes. For this purpose, the diameter of the envelope may be appreciably larger than the sum of the diameters of the tubes, the fluorescent tubes being spaced away from the inner surface of the envelope. Alternatively, the inside or outside of the envelope may have a narrow opaque band reflecting towards each fluorescent tube, the width of the band preferably being about equal to the diameter of the fluorescent tube. The envelope may comprise a thin layer of opal glass and one or more layers of transparent glass. The colour of the. light may be varied by regulating the current supplied to the various tubes.
