Abstract

<PICT:0453230/III/1> A machine for smearing fabrics with rubber solution or like adhesive comprises a base plate 1, a container 26 for the adhesive adapted to be moved to and from the plate by manual or pedal-operated means for the insertion of the fabric, the container having an outlet in its base provided with a sliding plate closure, and means on the base plate for feeding the fabric below the container. The container is carried by a rod 6 sliding in a boss 5 on the end of an L-shaped arm 4 on the plate 1, and is raised and lowered, against a spring or weight, by a treadle 7 connected by a link 9 and lever 10 to the rod 6, or by a cam lever 10<a>. The fabric is fed beneath the container by a conveyer band 14 which projects through an opening in the plate 1 and is driven from a motor 19 through a treadle-operated friction clutch 21 and a pulley 23. The conveyer 14 may be replaced by a drum or freely-rotating roller. The closure plate of the container may be operated manually by a bar 28, a lever or a rack and pinion, or may be cam-actuated as the container is raised and lowered. The machine may be provided with hot air or other means for heating the smeared fabric, and with a folding or hemming device followed by pressure rollers 31. A tape may be attached to the smeared fabric, the tape being drawn from a reel over a guide roller and applied to the fabric by pressure rollers, which rollers may be raised from the fabric, against spring action, by a further treadle. The machine may be constructed so that the tape itself is smeared instead of, or in addition to, the fabric.
