1408912 Seaming non-metallic sheet material DETEXOMAT MACHINERY Ltd 15 June 1973 [7 June 1972 16 Nov 1972] 26481/72 and 52911/72 Heading B5K [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for closing the toe of hosiery comprises a clamp 18 receiving the toe end to present it to the seaming means which may be an adhesive applicator, a carrier leg 30 and means 26 for drawing the stocking on to the leg, the leg including means 32 operable to advance the toe end to the stocking to the clamp, everter means 22 being provided alongside the leg to turn the stocking inside out after toe seaming, and transfer means 24 for moving the welt from the leg to the everter means. Leg 30 comprises a suction tube into which the stocking is entered on presentation to remove twist, the welt is then drawn back over the tube by the operator and rollers 26. The tube is provided with side members comprising blade 32 (Fig. 3) connected to a slidable yoke 52 and presenting slots (not shown), engaging pins 63. As the yoke moves forward the blades move apart and along the leg to carry the blank off the leg and place the toe beneath the resilient surface of clamp 42 which descends to clamp the toe. The transfer means 24 comprises pairs of fingers 38, 40 carried on respective U-shaped member 124, 186 mounted on a yoke 130 rotatably and slidably mounted on cross shaft 39. When the welt has been moved off leg 30 by blades 32 shaft 39 rotates to enter the fingers 38, 40 into the welt opening and link 176 slides U-shaped member 186 along groove 184 to lower fingers 40 and open the welt. The yoke then moves along shaft 39 to position the welt adjacent the everting means 22 which is that disclosed in Specification 1,073,280. In a modification, Figs. 9 and 10, not shown, the everter comprises a clamp assembly 200, 202 to draw the hose or sock over tube 36. Thereafter, further rubber faced jaws 210 hold the sock with its toe firmly against the tube end while a tube 209 moves forward from within tube 36 to flatten the toe closing seam. Suction is then applied to tube 36, clamps 210 are released and clamps 200, 202 move forward to allow the sock to enter the tube thus turning it inside out.
