My invention relates to themaking of rectangular or oblong baskets and has reference more particularly to the shifting of the form in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation for locating the ends and sides of the baskets in proper positioning for stapling, and the adaptability of the form for free rotation at required times.
In the manufacture of certain kinds of baskets wherein an oblong or other non-circular form is employed to support the work as fasteners are applied therearound it is desirable to shift the form transversely of the axis of rotation to clear the fastener setting mechanism and locate the various portions of the work in proper position for applying fasteners theretoand moreover in some baskets, particularly where a hoop strip forms the inner and outer binding for the upper edge of the basket, it is desirable to release the form so as to permit an initial turn thereof for winding a portion of the hoop strip on the form before the basket is placed in position thereon.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide improved apparatus for the manufacture of baskets; to improve the facilities for adjusting the form transversely to its axis of rotation so as to properly position 'the various portions of the basket for operation thereupon by the fastener applying mechanism; to permit freedom of rotation of the transversely shiftable form at suitable times for winding a hoop strip thereon; to lock the form in a central position against lateral shifting when free to rotate; and in general, vto provide a simple and dependable machine which may be readily used without diiiiculty by an ordinary operator to make baskets rapidly and satisfactorily.

Referring to the drawings the reference numeral IIJ indicates the base of the machine which has a hollow standard II extending upwardly therefrom. A shaft i2 is mounted to slide vertically in the standard II and has secured to its upper end the bracket I3 which carries themovable staple forming and driving parts of a pair f Staplers I4 and I5 the stationary parts of said Staplers I4 and I5 being mounted on the bracket I6 which is secured to or formed as a part of the upper end of the standard II. A drive shaft Il is journaled in bearings l and I9 at Athe base of the machine and extends Within the lower end of the standard il where it is connected in the usual manner with the upright shaft I2 so that the latter is reciprocated" to cause the stapling mechanisms M and I5 to perform a single stapling operation in each revolution of said drive shaft il.
A drive pulley 2l), through which power is applied for operating the machine is mounted to rotate freely around the drive shaft Il and has a clutch connection with the said shaft. This clutch connection which is of the one revolution type `and arranged for disengagement at a suitable point in the rotation of the shaft I1 so that` the machine stops with the staple forming and driving parts in the upraised position, is controlled by the trip member 2l which slides in the bracket 22 to and from the clutch releasing position, being normally held inwardly in said position by the spring 23. A shaft 2G which is journaled at its rear end in the bracket 22 and at its forward end in the bracket 25, has an upstanding arm 26 operatively connected with the sliding trip member 2|, and near the front of the machine this shaft 24 is provided with a laterally extending pedal 2l, pressure on the tread portion of which rocks the shaft 24 and the upstanding arm 26 in a direction to withdraw the trip member 2l from the clutch disengaging position and permit the drive pulley 20 to connect with and rotate the shaft Il. The shaft I1 continues to rotate with the pulley 2i! as long as the pedal 2l is maintained in the depressed position, and upon release of said pedal the spring 23 returns the trip member 2| to the clutch releasing position wherein it disengages the clutch at the point in theY revolution of the shaft I'I wherein the stapling devices lare in the upraised position. To insure prompt stopping of the vshaft l1 when the clutch is released a brake drum 23 on said shaft is engaged by a brake band 29 which is so arranged that it has merely sufficient retarding action to accomplish the required purpose.
A form upon which the basket parts are assembled and fastened together is mounted on the standard i i at a convenient elevation and adapted to be rotated, the shaft through which power is applied for rotating the form being indicated at and journaled in the bearing portion 3l of the bracket 32 which is secured by bolts 33 to the standard ii at the proper elevation. This shaft Si) has a housing 34 fixed on the rear end containing `a suitable frictional connection with the sprocket 35 so that the latter rotates the shaft 3i] through this frictional connection except at such times as the housing 34 is held against turning movement at which time the frictional connection permits the necessary slippage between the sprocket S5 and the shaft 3i).
This sprocket 35 is connected by the chain 36 with the sprocket Si on the shaft I'i so that the sprocket 35 is constantly driven while the machine is in operation. The housing 34 is provided at suitable intervals around its periphery with stop lugs 38 with which the stop member 39 engages, said stop members 39 being on the upper end of the rod it which slides in the bearing il and is normally held upwardly by the spring 42 to position the stop member 39 in the path of movement of the stop lugs 33. On the lower end of said rod 4i! is a fitting Q3 which vstraddles the shaft il and is provided with a roller lill positioned to be engaged by a cam 45 on the shaft Il' so that the rod ifi is depressed at a certain time in the revolution of the shaft Il to release the'stop member 39 from the stop lug 38 with which it is engaged and permit rotation of the shaft 30 through the sprocket 35 and the friction connection in the housing the cam i5 being so arranged that the stop member 39, after each releasing operation, is returned by the spring 42 to the upraised position in ample time to engage the next succeeding stop lug 38 so that at each release the shaft 3d turns only that portion of a revolution measured by the circumferential distance between the stop lugs 38. y
Details of the construction of the friction driving connection in the housing 34 and of the clutch that connects the drive pulley 2@ with the shaft l'i are not given as these as well as the other parts of the mechanisms that effect the operation of the staplers and the step by step rotation of the shaft Sii are well known and in use in basket making machines.
The shaft 39 does not extend through to the front of the machine or support the basket form but terminates at a cut out or recess 56 in the top of the bracket 32 where it is provided with a coupling head di which has a pair of diametrically disposed openings 48. A hollow shaft or spindle i9 is mounted in the bearing portion 59 of the bracket 32 in axial alignment with the shaft 39 and xed on the rear end of this shaft or spindle #i9 is a coupling head 5i which has a pair of diametrically disposed rearwardly extending pins 52 which are adapted to engage in the openings i8 of the coupling head lll for connecting the shaft or spindle di! with the shaft 39 for rotation in unison therewith, the rear ends of the pins 52 being suitably rounded as shown in Figs. 3 and i to facilitate entry thereof into the openings 38.
The basket form 53 which is of an oblong, substantially rectangular and slightly tapered form suitable for making what are known as Carrier or Till baskets is mounted on the outer or forward end of the shaft or spindle t9 and supports the work for operation upon by the staplers i4 and i5 which co-operate respectively with the clinch cavities 515 and 55 at the ends and sides of the form for fastening a band or hoop strip to the upper edge portion of the side wall of the basket, and in order that in the stapling operation the ends of the form will be presented at substantially the same elevation as the sides, the form 53 is arranged to slide in the direction of its length across the end of the shaft or spindle 39 and facilities are provided which serve, as the spindle or shaft i9 rotates, to slide the form downwardly as each end comes up into the stapling position.
For slidably mounting the form 53 on the end of the shaft or spindle the latter is formed at its forward end with a substantially square or rectangular head 56 which slidably engages in a slot 5'? in the thick wall 59 of the form, which said slot extends in the direction of the length of the form and is of sufficient length to permit the necessary endwise movement of said form, the form being retained on the head 5S by the flange or shoulder Sii at the rear side of the wall 59 and the plate 3i which is clamped against the forward end of the head 59 by the bushing 62 which is threaded into an enlarged threaded recess in the head 5G.
A roller @3 is provided on form 53 near each end of and extending rearwardly from the wall 59 and the forward end of the bracket 32 is formed with a face plate portion Eli to which is attached a cam 555 of suitable contour to fit between the rollers S3 and co-operate therewith in the rotation of the shaft or spindle @-9 in a manner to centralize the form 53 on the end of the shaft or spindle 49 at the central position of the form in its translation across the axis of rotation, which said position is shown in Fig. 6 and hereinafter referred to as the midway position, as each side of the form 53 is presented upwardly to the Staplers it, l5 and to slide the form downwardly as each end of the form comes up to the stapling position and thereby not only insure clearance between the Staplers and the ends of the form as the latter is rotated but also insure the location of the ends Y 2 and 6 so as to effect the required downward shifting of the form and the peripheral form of the cam is such that all opposed points of engagement of the rollers t3 therewith are uniformly spaced apart, said cam however being preferably formed with a slot 66 extending upwardly from the bottom to facilitate the mounting of the cam with the shaft or spindle 49 extending therethrough. This affords a satisfactory construction as the sides of the cam leading to the open lower end of the slot @i5 insure proper guiding of the form to the point wherein the weight of the form holds the upper roller 63 engaged with the top of the cam G5.
In making baskets of the type shown in Fig. 9 which the illustrated machine is designed to produce, the bottom and side walls are formed of two crossed pieces Sl and 63 of Veneer which have their end portions bent upwardly to form the side walls which have their upper edge portions stapled between inner and outer portions of a retaining hoop strip or band 69 which 4is Wound once around the form and then after the pieces 5l and 53 are shaped in basket form on the form 53 with the upper edge portions of the side walls lapped over the previously wound portion of the band 59, is wound again around the form over the upper edge portions of the basket side walls and stapled thereto.
It is desirable to apply the first or inner winding of the band 55 by hand and to manually turn the form at the time and for this reason the shaft or spindle i9 if of such length and the out out place l5 in the bracket 32 of sufficient width to permit the form 53 to be pulled forwardly by the operator a sufficient distance to be .entirely withdrawn from under the Staplers VIll, I5 and at the same time the coupling member 5| is separated from the coupling member lll to disengage the pins 52 from the openings 48 so that the shaft or spindle i9 is free to turn. This forward movement of the form 53 also withdraws the rollers 53 from the cam 65 and when this takes place it is desirable to lock the form 53 centrally on the head 55 against endwise sliding movement.
In the present machine the final stapling opu eration which completes the basket leaves the form 53 with a side of the form facing upwardly as shown in Figs. l, 3, i, and 6 in which position the form is cent-rally located on the head 56 by the interengaged cam 55 and rollers 63 and a locking device is provided which works automatically7 as the form is pulled out, to lock the form in this position on the head 56 and to release same when the form is returned to the position under the staplers. To accomplish this auto-matic locking and release of the form, a rod 'lll extends through the hollow shaft or spindle Il@ and the bushing 52 and at the outer end within the hollow form 53 this rod 'I5 is bent back shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to provide a laterally offset rearwardly extending end 'H which is engaged in a notch or recess 'l2 in the edge of the plate 5l and is adapted to engage a central notch i3 in the flange lll which extends along one side of the opening 5l in the wall 59 of the form. A similar flange T5, which need not be centrally notched, extends along the other side of the opemng 5l, both of these flanges Hi and 'l5 as well as the rear face of the wall 55 being faced olf to insure proper thickness and satisfactory sliding engagement between the plate El and the flange or shoulder of the head 55.
The other end of the shaft or rod 14 has a collar or sleeve l5 fixed thereon and sliding in an enlarged opening 'il in the rear end of the shaft or spindle 5, which said opening H contains a spring 'i5 which exerts a tension on the collar 'it to face the rod 'it rearwardly so that the back turned forward end il will engage the notch l5 to lock the form 53 centrally on the head 56. This however can only occur when the form 55 is pulled forwardly from under the Staplers Ml, l5 as the form must be capable of sliding on the head 55 when said form is located under the Staplers and the rollers 63 are engaged with the cam 55, and the shaft or rod 'l5 is accordingly extended rearwardly a sufficient distance so that when the form 53 is pushed rearwardly to the stapling position and the coupling members il and 5l are coupled together, the rear end of the shaft or rod lil engages the 4coupling member 'il and the rod is thus pushed forwardly against the tension of the spring 'i8 a sufficient distanceVV to free the end 'H of `the said rod or shaft 'from the notch "i3 so that the form 53 is free to slide on the head 56.
For locating and holding the initial winding of the band 69 on the form 53 the latter has a ange 'I9 therearound which is cut away as at 8l! adjacent the clinch depressions 54 and 55 to accommodate the staple holders or guides which are pressed against the work in the stapling operation, and this flange is provided at each end and at each side of the form with a forwardly extending pin 8l under which the initial winding of the hoop or band @il is engaged and by which it is held in place as the basket is formed and applied thereover. l
For shaping and holding the basket pieces Gl, 68 on the form a form hood 52 is mounted to move to and from the front of the form, `said form hood in the present structure comprising a plate 83 with a wing member Si secured thereto along c each lateral edge and a wing member 85 secured thereto along each end edge which co-operate respectively with the side and end walls of the form 53 to shape and hold the basket pieces 6l and 53 therebetween in the form of the basket. This hood is supported on the upper end of an arm 8S which is pivoted at its lower end to the machine base lli to permit the necessary movement of the upper end tol and from the front of the form a weight 8l being attached to the arm 55 at or near the lower end to impel the upper end of the arm 86 toward the form 53 and a pedal 8S being provided, pressure upon which serves to overcome the weight 55'! and swing the upper end of the arm 35 away from the form.
The upper end of the arm .fl-5 has a socket portion 89 in which the stem 9@ is secured so that it is in axial alignment with the form supporting shaft or spindle i3 when said arm 35 is in the position to hold the form hood 82 on the form 53 .and this stem has a circular disk like head 9i on its inner end for rotatably and slidably supporting the form hood t2, said head il! being spaced from the socket portion 89 of the arm S5 by a shoulder 92 on the stein 55. Any convenient arrangement may be employed for attaching the form hood 82 on the head 9i of the stem Sil, the present arrangement comprising a pair of guides 53 along opposite edges of a spacing plate 94 on the outer face of the hood plate 83 forming a channel for the head 9i which is held therein by overhanging plates 95,` the latter of which together with the guides 93 are secured to the hood plate 83 by the screws 95. With this construction the form hood is capable of rotation about the axis of the stem 9@ and its circular head 9| and may also slide laterally on the head 9|, the extent of this sliding movement being determined by the heads ill of the cap screws that are employed at the ends of the spacing plate 94 for securing the latter to the hood plate B3, it being understood of course that the extent of sliding movement of the form hood 32 on the head 9i is suicient to correspond to the sliding movement of the form 53 on the supporting head 56 of the form supporting shaft or spindle 59.
In making a basket with this machine the machine stops after each basket has been completed, with the form in the position shown in Figs. l, 4 and 6 wherein a side of the form 53 is presented upwardly to the Staplers it and l5 which have just completed the last stapling operation on that side of the form. The operator then presses his foot on the pedal 88 and swings the form hood 82 away from the form 53 so that the completed ell) basket may be removed and during or after the removal of this completed basket the form 53 is pulled forwardly from under the Staplers I4, I thereby disengaging the coupling members l1 and 5I and at the same time releasing the rod 10 so that the end 'Il thereof locks the form 53 in the central position on the head 56. The operator then slips the end portion 98 of the band 69 under the pin l at the top side of the form and turns the latter by hand three quarters of a revolution in a clockwise direction, wrapping said band around the form and engaging it under the succession pins 8l and against the flange 'I9 at the end of which proceeding the form is in the vertical position with the band 69 projecting laterally to the left from the upper left hand corner of the form. The veener blanks 61 and 68 which have previously been scored along the fold lines are then folded over the form and the latter indexed another quarter turn to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 6 wherein the strip or band G9 overlies the initial end portion 98 with an edge portion of the veener blank 61 therebetween and the form is then pushed back under the Staplers, at which time the pins 52 of the coupling member 5| are in position to engage the openings 158 of the coupling member l1 and the rollers 63 likewise in position to engage the cam 65 which preferably has the edges beveled as at 99 to facilitate such engagement, and it is understood that the engagement of the coupling members 5I, ll1, engages the rear end of the rod 'lll with the coupling member 41, thereby releasing the locking engagement of the other end 1I of said rod with the notch 13 of the form so that the latter is now free to slide on the head 55 to follow the contour of the cam 65.
In the further operation of making the basket the projecting portion of the strip or band 5S is Wound around the form as the latter is turned to the successive stapling positions and to effect this winding of said projecting portion of the strip or band 69 a holder or guide is provided with which the projecting portion of the strip or band 69 is engaged in the operation of pushing the form back to the stapling position. This holder or guide is mounted on the laterally offset portion |90 of the shaft I Ell which is engaged through a vertical slot IGZ in a lateral extension H33 of the bracket 32, the shaft lllI being threaded and provided with a clamped nut |64 at each side of the extension I G3 for rigidly securing the shaft in any desired position of adjustment in the slot |92. A bracket I 515 has a hub portion whereby it is secured by set screws llll on the offset portion lll@ of the shaft lill and this bracket has an elevated plate like extension I 61 with a forwardly extending substantially horizontal ange |638 on which the projecting portion of the strip or band 59 is placed when the form 53 and basket parts thereon are pushed back to the stapling position.
A lever lu@ is pivoted at IIB to the portion |51 cf the bracket H35 and extends laterally from said pivot over the flange |08 toward the form and cooperates with said ange lllii to form a holder and guide through which the strip or band 69 is rawn onto the form by the rotation of the latter, the strip being held between said lever |99 and ange |98 against rearward displacement by the plate like extension |01 of the bracket I and against forward displacement by the lug 2li] which is on the lever |99 and arranged so that in the depressed clamping position of said lever it overlaps the forward edge of the flange l 38 while in the raised position of said lever it is elevated suiliciently sol that the projecting portion of the strip or band 69 may be readily inserted between the lever |09 and ange |08. A spring plate |'II which is secured to the under side of the lever |59 extends beyond the end of the latter under the stapler I4 and is arranged so that when the lever |09 is depressed it holds the strip 69 down against the top edge portion of the basket on the form. This spring plate holds the strip E9 substantially at the location where the stapler I 4 operates on the basket and to provide clearance for the stapling operation this spring plate is offset laterally at its outer end as indicated at |I2 and provided with an angular notch I3 through which the stapler I4 operates.
A spring I I 4 is arranged to exert a constant tension to swing the lever |09 downwardly to the strip clamping position but this lever is controlled by the clutch operating shaft 24 so that it is held in the elevated position against the tension of said spring II4 except at such time as the pedal 21 is depressed to cause the stapling mechanisms to operate and the form to rotate. To this end the bracket |05 has a depending arm Il which has the lever II6 pivoted thereto at Ill and this lever has its longer arm connected by the link I I8 to a crank arm |I9 on the clutch controlling shaft 26! so that when the pedal 21 is depressed to engage the clutch through which the machine is operated, the link |I8 is pulled downwardly and the lever IIS rocked on its pivot ||`I. The shorter end of the lever I I6, which by reason of this connection is swung upwardly when the clutch pedal 21 is depressed, is connected by the link |29 with the outer end of the lever |09, and in order to leave the lever |09 free to be held downwardly in the clamping position by the spring I I4 and capable of some oscillation that may be necessary as the corners of the form 53 pass under the end of the plate spring extension III, the link |23 has a slot |22 at its upper end, as shown in Fig. 8, through which the connecting pin or bolt |23 engages so that when the lever |09 is in the clamping position it is permitted a certain freedom of movement and its clamping pressure is occasioned by the tension of the spring I I4.
After the form 53 with the basket parts thereon has been pushed rearwardly and the projecting portion of the strip S9 placed in the hoop guide I lll-408, the pedal 88 is released sol that the weight 81 swings the upper end of the arm 8S rearwardly to engage the form hood 32 and hold the veneer blanks 61 and 68 in shape on the form, in which position said form hood also holds the form in the fully retracted stapling position. The operator then presses on the pedal 21 so as to set the stapling and form turning mechanisms in operation and preferably holds the pedal depressed until the entire -stapling operations on the basket have been completed.
Immediately upon pressure being applied to the pedal 21 the clamping lever |09 is released to engage and hold the strip or band 69. At the same time the clutch mechanism is operated to establish a driving connection between the pulley 28 and the shaft I1 which results first in the release of the stop member 39 from the stop lug 38 of the friction connection and the turning of the form 53 a quarter turn from the horizontal position (shown in Fig. 6) to the vertical position and at the same time draws the strip 69 across the upper end of the form, after which the first stapling operation occurs in which the two staplers ld and l operate simultaneously to drive the staples ida and Ia respectively through the several layers of the strip 69 and the edge of the veneer blank it therebetween at the upper end of the form. The form 53 is then rotated another quarter turn and the strip 69 drawn across the side wall of the basket and the staples lib and ltb driven, then upon another quarter turn of the form the staplers i4, and E50 are driven, after which the form is turned to the final position in which the staples Md and ld are driven, the staple llid being located adjacent the final end of the strip t9 which was held in place by the end of the spring plate lll as it was secured in place by the staple ltd.
As the final stapling operation occurs the operator releases the pedal 2l so that the clutch trip member 2l returns to position to release the clutch and stop the machine with the staplers in the raised position and this leaves the form in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 6 with the cam 45 on the drive shaft il ready to release the friction drive Sli and turn the form a quarter turn before the first stapling operation occurs when the pedal 2 is again depressed.
The pedal 88 is then depressed to withdraw the form hood t2 from the form 53, the completed basket removed and the machine is then ready for the assembling and stapling of another basket.
While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principles of myvinvention, the scope of which is to be determined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a rotatable form which is reciprocable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, means with which the form rotatively co-operates to reciprocate the form simultaneously to or from its midway position during each quarter rotation of the form, and fastener applying mechanism adapted to co-operate with the form to apply fasteners to the work at intervals between quarter rotations of said form.
2. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a rotatable form which is reciprocable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, stationary means co-operating with the form to reciprocate said form to or from its midway position during each quarter rotation of the form, and fastener applying mechanism adapted to co-operate with the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form at intervals between quarter rotations of said form.
3. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a rotatable form which is reciprocable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, means co-operating with the form and serving through and simultaneously with the rotation of said form to effect a gradual reciprocal movement of the form to or from its midway position during each quarter rotation of the form, and fastener applying mechanism adapted to cooperate with the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form.
4. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of an elongated rotatable form slidable longitudinally in a direction transverse to its vaxis of rotation, means whereby the form .is
gradually moved longitudinally to a central position relative to the axis of rotation during rotation ofthe form from vertical to horizontal positions, and fastener applying mechanism adapted to co-operate with the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form.
5. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of an elongated rotatable form adapted to move longitudinally in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, a stationary cam, roller means on the form engaged with the cam so that the latter reciprocates the form transversely to its axis of rotation simultaneously as the form is rotated, and fastener applying mechanism Aadapted to co-operate with the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form.
6. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a rotatable form, means for moving the form in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, said form being loosely mounted in a manner whereby it is movable axially to and from engagement with said means, and fastener applying mechanism co-operable with said form to apply fasteners to the work on the form.
'7. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of an elongated rotatable form which is movable longitudinally in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, means for simultaneously rotating the form and moving the form transverse to its axis of rotation, said form being loosely mounted in a manner whereby it is movable axially to and from engagement with said means, and fastener applying mechanism cooperable with the form to apply fasteners to the work thereon.
8. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a rotatable form, stationary means cooperating with the form to move said form in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation of the form as the form is rotated, and fastener applying mechanism co-operable with the form to apply fasteners to the work thereon, said form being loosely mounted in a manner whereby it is releasable from the said stationary means by axial movement thereof from the fastener receiving position.
9. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of an elongated rotatable form adapted to" move longitudinally in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, a cam, roller means on the form engaged with the cam so that the latter reciprocates the form transversely to its axis of rotation as the form is rotated, said form being loosely mounted in a manner whereby it is movable to release said roller means from said cam by a relative axial movement thereof, and fastener applying means cooperable With the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form.
l0. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of fastener applying means, a rotatably mounted form with which the said means co-operates to apply fasteners to the work on the form, said form being axially movable to and from the position in which it co-operates with the Afastener applying means, and said form being shiftable transversely to its axis of rotation when in position to co-operate with the fastener applying means and being locked against transverse shifting when moved axially from said position.
ll. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of fastener applying means, a rotatably mounted transversely elongated form with which said means co-operates to apply fas- .teners to the work on the form, said form being axially movable to and from the fastener receiving position and longitudinally shiftable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, a cam for controlling the longitudinal shifting of the form, said form being disconnected from said cam and locked against longitudinal shifting when moved axially from the fastener receiving position.
l2. In an apparatus of the class described the combination o'f fastener applying means, a rotatably mounted transversely elongated form with which said means co-operates to apply fasteners to the work on the form, said form being axially movable to and from the fastener receiving position and longitudinally shiftable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, and form rotating mechanism, said form being disconnected from said mechanism and locked against longitudinal shifting and free to rotate when moved axially away lfrom the fastener receiving position.
13. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of fastener applying means, a rotatably mounted transversely elongated form with which said means co-operates to apply fasteners to the work on the form, said form being longitudinally shiftable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation, a cam for controlling the longitudinal shifting of the form, means for locking the form against said longitudinal shifting, and a form rotating mechanism, said form being movably axially away from the fastener receiving position and by such movement disconnected from the form rotating mechanism and from said cam and locked against longitudinal shifting.
14. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a pair of aligned rotatable shafts one of which is movable axially to and from operative connection with the other shaft and the latter of which said shafts is operatively connected with a form rotating mechanism, a transversely elongated form mounted on the axially movable shaft so as to slide longitudinally in a direction transverse to the axis of said shaft, a stationary cani, means on the form engaging the cam whereby the latter controls the longitudinal sliding movement of the form, fastener applying means positioned to co-operate with the form, and a lock for holding the form against longitudinal sliding movement, said form being disconnected from said cam and locked against longitudinal sliding movement when the axially movable shaft is moved axially from operative connection with the shaft of the form rotating mechanism.
15. In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a pair of aligned rotatable shafts one of which is movable axially to and from operative connection with the other shaft and the latter of which is operatively connected with a form rotating mechanism, a stapling mechanism, a form mounted on said axially movable shaft and slidable in a direction transverse to the axis of said shaft, and a lock for holding the form against transverse sliding movement, said lock including a member which extends longitudinally within the axially movable shaft and is actuated b y the separation of said shafts.
16. The method of making baskets and the like which comprises axially withdrawing from a fastener receiving position a rotatable form which is shiftable in a direction transverse to its axis of rotation and simultaneously with such Withdrawal disconnecting the form from a rotating mechanism and from a transverse shifter and locking the form against transverse shifting, then manually rotating the form and winding a portion of a hoop strip around the form, then applying and shaping on the form and over the wound portion of the hoop strip, basket materials that constitute the bottom and side walls of the basket and returning the form to the fastener receiving position, and simultaneously with the return of the form to said position connecting the form with said rotating mechanism and with the transverse shifter and releasing the transverse shifter lock, and then rotating the form in a step by step manner by said rotating mechanism and simultaneously winding and fastening the remaining unwound portion of the hoop strip around the basket materials and over the previously wound portion of said hoop strip.
17. In a machine for making oblong baskets and the like, the combination of a rotatable spindle, a longitudinally reciprocable oblong form mounted on the spindle to rotate therewith, fastener applying mechanism oo-operating with the form to apply fasteners to the Work on the form, and means co-operating with the form to reciprocate the latter to or from its midway position during each quarter turn of the spindle, said spindle and form being simultaneously and correspondingly rotatable a quarter turn at each rinterval between fastener applying operations of the fastener applying mechanism.
18. In a machine for making oblong baskets and the like, the combination of a rotatable oblong form, a spindle on which the form is mounted to reciprocate longitudinally in a direction transverse to the axis of the spindle, fastener applying mechanism co-operable with the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form, and means whereby the form is reciprocated to or from its midway position during each quarter turn of the spindle, said spindle and form being simultaneously and correspondingly rotatable a quarter turn at each interval between fastener applying operations of the fastener applying mechanism.
19. In a machine for making oblong baskets and the like, the combination of a rotatable and longitudinally reciprocable oblong form, a spindle on which the form is mounted, fastener applying mechanism co-operable with the form to apply fasteners to the work on the form, and means whereby the rotary movement of the form is utilized to simultaneously effect a positive reciprocation of the form to or from its midway position during each quarter turn of the spindle, said spindle and form being simultaneously and correspondingly rotatable a quarter turn at each interval between fastener applying operations of the fastener applying mechanism.
20. In a, machine for making oblong baskets and the like, the combination of a rotatable form, mechanism operable to automatically rotate the form in four successive quarter-turn steps, fastener applying mechanism automatically operable during the interval between each of said quarter turn steps to coi-operate with a side of the form and apply fasteners to the work on the form, and means whereby the form is simultaneously shifted lengthwise to or from a position concentric with its axis of rotation during each of said quarter-turn steps of the rotation of the form. 7
21. In a machine for making oblong baskets and the like, the combination of a rotatable form,
mechanism operable to automatically rotate the form in four successive quarter-turn steps, fastener applying mechanism automatically operable during the interval between each of said. quarter-turn steps to (3o-operate With a side of 5 the form and apply fasteners to the Work on the form, and means whereby the form is moved during certain quarter-turn steps of its rotation to a position concentric With its axis of rotation and. is moved during other quarter-turn steps of its rotation from said position.`
