Abstract

Used lubricating-oils are reconditioned, usually after dilution with light mineral oil, by treatment with sulphuric acid at temperatures below -2 DEG C. Alkali and fuller's earth treatment may follow. Water may be settled out before or after adding the diluent, and fuel and other light substances may be distilled off, e.g. with the diluent. In an example, 1000 kg. of used Diesel lubricating oil is diluted with 1000 kg. of kerosene and cooled to -5 DEG C.; 100 litres of 66 DEG B<\>ae., acid is stirred in, and the oil separated from the precipitated resin is neutralized by aqueous alkali or by solid hydrate of lime and fuller's earth; the diluent, fuel, and other light bodies are distilled off, and the 800 kg. of regenerated oil is preferably brightened by treatment with fuller's earth.
