[Class 83 (iii)] [See also Groups XX and XXIV] In an engraving or copying milling machine wherein the tracer and cutter are carried by a pantograph, a handle is connected with the tracer through a transmission gear so that it moves through greater distances than the tracer in order to reduce the effort of the operator in moving the pantograph. In one form the pantograph is pivoted at 3, Fig. 1, on a shaft 2 rotatable in fixed bearings 1 and carries a cutter 6 and a tracer 8. The handle 10 is connected by links 9 to extensions 7b of the pantograph links 7a so that its distance h from the pivot 3 is greater than the distance t of the tracer 8. The scale of reproduction may be varied by adjusting the lengths of the links 4b, 7a, and three dimensional work may be performed by oscillating the pantograph about the axis 2. In a modified construction the cutter 6, Fig. 2, is carried by the link 14 of the pantograph pivoted at 3 on the rotatable shaft 2 and the tracer 8 is mounted on an extension of the link 13. The handle 10 is carried by a separate pantograph 17, 18 pivoted on a rotatable shaft 20 and connected at its middle point to the tracer 8. The scale is adjustable by displacing the link 14 parallel to itself, as shown dotted, and for traversing large models the pivotal point of the levers 17 on the shaft 20 may be displaced. In a further modification the tracer 8 and cutter 6, Fig. 3, are both carried by a link 27 of a pantograph attached to a rigid frame 28 or a rotatable shaft and the handle 10 is attached to the link 27 by links 30 and extensions 29a of the links 29. The distance h of the handle from the frame may be varied by adjusting the lengths 20a, 30 as shown dotted. The frame 28 may be slidable transversely to the plane of the pantograph and the handle may be attached to a bar slidably guided through the point 10 and mounted on the point of intersection of the links 29, 29a. In another modification the pantograph is duplicated about the axis perpendicular to the frame 28 and passing through the point 10, the tracer and cutter being mounted on opposite sides of the point x, and the handle is carried by a double pantograph pivoted at its middle point at x and connected at its inner end to an arm projecting laterally from a rotatable shaft replacing the frame 28. This form retains a large ratio of h : t but reduces the overall dimensions of the apparatus.
