[Class 122 (i)] In a light metal piston having longitudinal or angular slots 1, the free portions of the piston formed by the slots are reinforced by inserts 3, which may be of material having a similar coefficient of expansion to that of the piston. Ribs may be provided on the skirt at the points at which bending commences and adjacent to the ends of the inserts.
