[Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] [See also Groups I and XXXII] In a mechanical coupling particularly applicable for the connection between the connecting rod and the knife bar of a mowing or reaping machine or for coupling vehicles together a pair of jaws 1 each provided with a semispherical socket 21 are adapted to be closed on to a ball member by the movement of an eccentric 4 pivoted in one of the jaws and moving in a sheave 3 secured to the other jaw, a spring pressed rod 12 being pivotally connected to the eccentric and arranged to move over a dead centre as the eccentric is rotated so as to tend to hold the jaws either apart or towards each other. The pivot pin of the eccentric is extended to form a head by which the eccentric may be rotated. The sockets of the jaws may be cylindrical to engage a trunnion member and a cam, crank or like device may replace the eccentric. The spring pressed rod may, instead of being pivoted to the eccentric, engage in a recess therein or be coupled to the eccentric through gear teeth.
