Abstract
Tooth pins and dental accessories made from wire have a base metal core provided with an inner layer of palladium or silver or alloy thereof, an outer layer of precious metal, and an intermediate layer comprising platinum or rhodium or alloy thereof which prevents diffusion of the outer layer into the inner. A rod of nickel or its alloys may have a layer of palladium, silver, or palladium-silver and/or gold alloy applied to it, preferably in the form of a tubular shell which is secured to the nickel core by heat and pressure. Alternatively, a sheet of the precious metal is soldered on a sheet of the base metal, the composite sheet formed into a tube and a solid core soldered into it. The composite rod is rolled and drawn into wire, cut into lengths which may be upset to form heads, and the pins submerged in an electroplating solution from which a layer of platinum, rhodium, or alloy thereof is deposited while the pins are agitated. This layer may be a thin or "flash" coating. A final layer of gold is then deposited. The inner layer may form about 8 per cent by weight of the core, the intermediate layer 1/4 -\ba1/2 per cent. Specification 374,003, [Group XXXVI], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to the provision of a diffusion-preventing layer but to tooth pins and accessories having at least one of the outer layers electrodeposited. The inner layer may be of platinum, gold or platinum-gold alloy, and the outer layer of platinum. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
