Abstract
253,209. Walker, C. L. March 14, 1925. Metal pipes and tubes. - Capillary tubes of noble metal particularly platinum and iridio-platinum, to be used for the manufacture of jets for spinning artificial filaments are prepared as follows : - A cylinder of platinum &c. is bored out axially and into the passage so formed is fitted a core of copper, silver or nickel; the body is then drawn to the desired fineness after the manner of wiredrawing; the wire is cut into lengths, and finally the core of copper &c. is dissolved out. The core may have a section other than circular in which case the shape of the core is retained in the finished wire and tube; thus, sections as indicated at C, D, E, Fig. 10, may be obtained, the core being built up in part of noble metal and' in part of soluble metal as there indicated. Alternatively the original cylinder of platinum &c. may be provided with a plurality of cores so as to form tubes with a plurality of passages, and in this case the wire may be twisted in order to cause these passages to take a helical conformation. According to one of the Provisional Specifications the capillary tubes may be formed by heavily plating with platinum &c., wire of soluble metal which eventually constitutes the core to be dissolved away.
