Abstract

449,884. Tubes for heat-exchangers. STILL, W. J., 19, Denbigh Road, Ealing, London. Jan. 10, 1935, Nos. 831 and 9016. [Class 64 (iii)] [See also Group XXII] Heat-interchanger elements comprise spirally wound flattened coils of wire w held at both narrow portions of each coil between flattened tubes t conveying one fluid, another fluid passing between the coils and tubes. The form of tube shown has parallel grooves g<1> ... g<4> dividing it into tubes t<1> ... t<5> ; the narrow portions of the wire coils, which form the side appear as a rectilineal zigzag wire, extend into and are preferably soldered to the grooves, and the wire constituting the longer portions of the coils is flattened to form vanes w<1> at right angles to the planes of the tubes, offering minimum resistance to the fluid flow. The flat portions in the wire may be formed by passing it between axially grooved rollers on its way to a coilforming blade at a rate which presents the round and still soft portions to the blade edges so that the flattened and hardened portions form the sides of the loops. The blade is tapered so as to provide by a screwthread adjustment the correct perimeter at the winding position, and has a spring drive to compensate for the cyclical variations of winding speed on the blade. The tubes may be made of tinned brass or copper and the coils of tinned copper wire so that when clamped together and heated the wires will become soldered to the tubes ; or the tubes may be coated with solder the wire not being tinned, or a length of solder may be inserted alongside each coil. The components may be assembled on an inclined table with the tube ends received in grooves in side ribs, and a pile of coils alternating with distance pieces stacked against each tube. The whole is clamped to a frame, the distance pieces are removed and the parts soldered. Specifications 271,122, [Class 64 (iii)], and 282,244, [Class 83 (iv)], are referred to.
