Abstract

449,533. Magnet coils. MANIFOLD, M. BOWMAN-, Heatheot, Worplesdon Station, Surrey, and BLUMLEIN, A. D., 32, Audley Road, Ealing, London. Oct. 24, 1934, Nos. 30545/34 and 12052 /35. [Class 35] [See also Group XL] In order to produce a magnetic field uniform over a section at right angles to the lines of force, a coil i: wound to fill the space swept out by a cylindrical or frusto conical surface mov ing through a short distance at right angles to its axis, the term cylindrical in. cluding any surface generated by a line moving so as to be parallel to a fixed straight line and cut a closed plane curve, and similarly for the term frusto-conical. The turns in this space are parallel to the axis of the cone or cylinder and the direction of the current on one side of a plane at right angles to the direction of motion of the axis and bisecting the space is opposite to that on the other. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement of two such coils surrounding a circular cathode-ray tube 3. One coil consists of two parts 7, 8, and the other of two parts 9, 10. The current flows at right angles to the plane of the upper and that in the left hand portion of the coil 7, 8 flows in the opposite direction to that in the right hand portion. An iron sheath 4 surrounding the coils provides a return path for the flux, the end connections lying outside the sheath. This sheath may be dispensed with when the cross-section of the coil is a circle, but is necessary in other cases. The two coils may be of different lengths.
