Abstract
449,071. Testing fabrics &c. HATHAWAY, E. F., 515, Worcester Street, Wellesley Hills, and BIXBY, W., 195, Freeport Street, Dorchester, both in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Nov. 11, 1935, No. 31155. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1934. [Class 42 (ii)] A specimen R of fabric, lino, &c. to be tested for wear by rubbing, impact, torsion, shearing &c. actions is clamped on a block 25 mounted on a two-part slide one of which is slid on bed guides 16 by levers 44, 41 and a cam 32 and the other of which is slid on the first part in a direction at right angles by a lever 34 and cam 31, the specimen moving in a double-S path. The cam 31, 32 is mounted on a vertical shaft 49. The rubber 14 can slide vertically and oscillate in bearings 72, 70, is pressed on to the specimen by a weight 89 and lifted periodically by an eccentric 96 on a shaft 52 and a lever 92. The rubber is oscillated through links 113, 111, 107, 105, a hollow shaft 108 inside the pillar 73 and a crank 104 on the shaft 56. The shaft 56 is driven by a belt 59 from a motor 61 and drives through gearing 55, 54 the shaft 52 which in turn through worm gearing 51, 50 drives the shaft 49. The shaft 49 is connected by bevel gearing 124, 124a with a shaft 125 driving through a worm 126 a shaft 128 which through another worm 129 drives a shaft 131 passing through the hollow shaft 108 and carrying a cylinder 132 for an indicator card 175. The shafts 125, 128 carry notched discs 150, 157 which directly and through a bell-crank 153 allow a rod 146 to drop periodically. When the rod 146 drops it first, through levers 144, 142, a pin 159, and a rod 140 allows a feeler 135 to drop on to the specimen R and a connected marker 170 also to fall, and then through a rod 162 and rockshaft 164 causes the marker to strike the indicator card 175. The rubber 14 has a working surface of leather &c. cemented &c. on to its bottom. Worn off particles of the specimen are drawn off through the hollow shaft 64 and the column 73 by a fan 118 and collected in a bag 121. The pin 159 is connected with a switch in the circuit of the motor so that when it is withdrawn to allow an indication to be made manually on the card 175 the motor is stopped. The apparatus is portable and mounted on wheels 10.
