Abstract
448,891. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., Caxton House, Tothill Street, Westminster, and ALDINGTON, J. N., c/o Siemens Electric Lamps & Supplies, Ltd., Dock Road, Preston, Lancashire. Jan. 22, 1935, No. 2116. [Class 39 (i)] To start a hotcathode lamp containing gas or vapour, an electrode is heated by a discharge between it and an auxiliary electrode in a low-resistance starting circuit shunting the main discharge path and this circuit is opened, after the main discharge has started, by a thermal switch operated by heat generated in the lamp. The main electrodes 4, 5 are surrounded by auxiliary electrodes 6, 7 which are connected together through wires 11, 13 sealed into a glass bead 12 and through contacts 141 controlled by a bimetallic strip 14. The starting circuit in shunt to the discharge path between the electrodes 4, 5 includes the two auxiliary discharge gaps and the wires 11, 13 and contacts 14<1> and may also include a low resistance which may be in the cap 3. The movement of the strip 14 may be limited by a back-stop. The discharge vessel 1 is shown flexibly supported in the outer container 2 by spiral springs 9. In a modification, one auxiliary electrode only is provided and is connected to the other main electrode by the starting circuit 13.
