Abstract

355,982. Vapour &c. lamp systems. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Sept. 23, 1930, No. 28442. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1929. [Class 38 (iv).] A discharge tube b having an incandescent cathode and positive column light is ignited a definite time after application of current, by a retarded relay operative at the supply pressure but ceasing to operate while the pressure on the relay falls appreciably. The relay is preferably connected to a point between a choke coil a<3> and an anode A<3> and controls the circuit to an auxiliary igniting electrode c, this circuit may include a transformer or transfotmers g<1>, h<2> or an induction coil and interrupter. A glow discharge tube t may constitute the relay, its electrodes being caused to approach one another when heated by the discharge, so closing the ignition circuit after the time delay required, but a separate retarding device may be used, and the glow lamp may be replaced by any type of rectifier. A thermal switch may for example be placed between the transformers g<1>, h<2>. The glow discharge tube f may have one or each of its electrodes mounted on a bimetallic strip, one of such strips being encased in mica to give the tube a rectifying action and induce unequal heating of the electrodes to produce contact between them. One electrode may be bimetallic and the other mounted on an elastic support such as molybdenum steel.
