447,826. Seats. ANSELL, H. V., 32, Maswell Park Crescent, Hounslow, and DEACON, G. J., 44, Worton Way, Isleworth, both in Middlesex, and LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD, 55, Broadway, Westminster. Oct. 23, 1934, No. 30309. [Class 52 (ii)] In a seat for vehicles, a rectangular seat - cushion supporting frame, and the side members and the top rail of a back frame, are formed from tubular material and the back squab 42, Figs. 1 and 8 is mounted upon a backing plate 43 the upper edge of which is engaged in a slotted transverse member 24, while a metal extension piece 44 at the lower edge of the backing plate clips over a transverse member 30 at the rear of the seat frame. The main frame comprises a single length of tubing comprising a front part 14, side parts 15, 16, and upstanding back parts 17, 18 in the open ends of which are inserted castings 20, Fig. 1, or 62, Fig. 6, to which the top rail 23 and the transverse member 24 are secured. The casting 20 has a member adapted to connect with a cheek rail 27, Fig. 2, the lower end of which is connected to the side rail 15 of the frames. The backing plate 43 of the back squab is of wood or metal, the top edge of which fits into a groove in the member 24 which may be of tubular or channel shape. The side edges of the backing plate may be curved to fit around or against the uprights 17, 18. A metal or wood sheet 49 may be fitted into a channel or groove formed in the check rail 27, while its rear edge is curved to fit the rear upright. The seat cushion is built on an underframe 54 which is secured to the frame by plates 56. The rail 23 may be connected to a stanchion 58 in a vehicle by a casting 59. The frame is mounted on legs 29. The wide seat shown in Figs. 6 and 8 is secured at one side to the body of the vehicle by means of a casting 67 which embraces one side rail of the frame and is attached by means of plate to a batten 71 of the body. The tubes of the frame may be strengthened where desirable by means of split liners.
