Abstract
Substituted benzyl carbinamines having the formula C6H5.CH2.CHX.NH2 where X is an alkyl or alphyl group are prepared by electrolytic reduction of a benzyl ketone oxime. Benzyl methyl ketone may be prepared by heating the calcium salts of phenylacetic acid and acetic acid; the ketone after separation is converted into its oxime by treatment with hydroxylamine in alkaline solution. This is reduced electrolytically in the presence of sulphuric acid for production of the corresponding amine sulphate, which is then treated with alkali to free the amine which separates as an oily layer which may be decanted off. This is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and oily impurities removed for example by means of isopropyl ether. The hydrochloride solution is treated with alkali to separate the amine which is then distilled.
