[Class 143] A portable apparatus for ascertaining the weight of rail vehicles by weighing the wheel pressures comprises a base or frame for adjustment to the rail, a wheel lifting and load bearing lever adjustable in relation to the base or frame and a beam weighing or load indicating mechanism carried by the base or frame to which the load is transferred by the lifting lever. The device comprises a frame 1 supported at its front end by a pair of arms 2 provided with hooks 40, Fig. 5, extending over the rail head and with wedges 42 to adjust the position of the arms 2 above the rail. The wheel rim is engaged by a knife-edge 10 on one end of a lever 6, the other end of the lever being pivotally supported by a screw spindle 16 adjustable vertically by a hand wheel 17. The load on the knife-edge 10 is transmitted by a knife-edge 7 to compound levers 9, 22 connected to a steelyard 23. The rear end of the frame is supported above the ground by a plate 3 and screw spindle 4 and may be adjusted vertically by means of a hand wheel 5. Water levels 43, 44 are mounted on the frame 1 and the lever 6 respectively. In using the device, the knife-edge 10 is brought to bear against the vehicle wheel by forcing in the wedges 42, the frame 1 is brought to the horizontal position by turning the hand wheel 5 and the vehicle wheel is raised from the rail by turning the hand wheel 17 until the lever 6 is in the horizontal position as indicated by the water level 44 or by a fixed tongue on the frame. The wheel pressure is ascertained by adjusting the steelyard poise. Preferably, the two wheel pressures on first one axle and then the other are ascertained by the simultaneous use of two of the devices, or the wheel pressures first on one side of the vehicle and then on the other side are ascertained by the simultaneous use of a number of the devices. Transporting wheels 25 and handles 27 are provided.
