Abstract
447,063. Frames and covers for manholes and the like. ELKINGTON, V., Dour Iron Foundry, Dover. Nov. 9, 1934, No. 32280. [Class 107] The frame 15 of a manhole cover 16 or the like is of channel section, open at the bottom, and is provided in its upper part with apertures 20 through which concrete can be injected to fill the hollow interior. The inner side wall of the channel is shaped to provide an inclined seating surface for the cover which surface may consist of two inclined faces 17, 19, and an intermediate substantially horizontal face 18 with rounded edges between adjacent faces. The cover is formed with similarly shaped faces 28, 29, 30 and thus may be readily removed from the frame. The cover is formed with main and subsidiary webs 24, 25 and apertures 26, and is adapted to receive fillings 52 of concrete or wood blocks. Main and subsidiary webs are also provided in the interior of the frame which is preferably formed of four separate sections each comprising a side and a corner. The corners may be rounded as shown or square, and adjacent sections are interconnected by bolts passing through their vertical end walls, a filling of hard white metal being added to key the joint. The frame may be cut away at each end to receive a casting which is riveted to the frame and which extends for a short distance beneath the cover. The projecting portion has a tapped hole for receiving a bolt which passes through the cover and locks it to the frame. In the case of large openings, the cover is made in sections, as shown in Fig. 11, the intermediate sections being each provided with a projecting edge 39 of a shape similar to the seating of the frame to provide a support for an adjacent section. Cross-bars may be provided for supporting the cover sections in cases where the frame is of considerable width. As shown in section in Fig. 13, such a cross-bar 40 is of similar construction to the frame members, being of inverted channel-section, having seating faces 17 ... 19, and having apertures 44 for receiving the concrete filling. The concrete is reinforced by rods 41 which support a stainless steel plate which closes the bottom. of the channel-bar 40. The bar is supported by a rolled-steel joist 45, the ends of which are carried in cast-iron housings 46 anchored to the roadway by rag-bolts. The cross-bar is bolted at its ends to the frame members, the joint being completed by a white metal filling. A stainless steel bolt passing through the ends of the cross-bar and bearing on the joist is employed to loosen and lift the cross-bar, to facilitate its removal, after which the joist also can be removed. In some cases the joist may be dispensed with. Specification 318,012, [Class 107], is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
