Abstract
446,478. Thermionic cathodes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 20, 1935, No. 32182. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] A cathode for use in valves, gas-filled lamps or rectifiers comprises a mass of barium oxide 51 wholly enclosed in a cover consisting of metal washers or helically-wound ribbon 48 held together by rods 49 and refractory end plates 50 ; the oxide forms an emitting film on the cover by migration through the crevices between the washers &c. The oxide may be granular or a compact mass, and nickel or tungsten may be mixed therewith to reduce the oxide during the life of the cathode. A heat shield consisting of an open-ended cylinder with slits in its wall may be used. The filling may be argon, neon, mercury sodium or caesium or a mixture of these materials at a pressure of one micron upwards. Speci- , fication 395,794 is referred to.
