Abstract

Porous artificial sponges and similar spongeous artificial products are produced by moulding or shaping a mixture of 20 grams of hemp, 400 grams of viscose containing 10 per cent of cellulose, and 1200 grams of crystalline decahydrated sodium sulphate.ALSO:Porous artificial sponges and similar spongeous artificial products are produced by moulding or shaping a mixture of cellulose solution, fibre, and crystalline substances, inserting the plastic mass entirely or partly into a bed of polyhedric bodies or bodies having curved surfaces, incrusting the bodies into the surface of the mass by pressure, coagulating the mass, and subsequently eliminating the incrusted bodies. The incrusted bodies may be substances which are soluble in the usual treatment or finishing baths or in other baths of an appropriate solvent, e.g. carbonates which may be removed by treatment with an acid, or may be insoluble substances such as gravel, ground quartz, or metal bodies, which may be removed by hand or mechanically by impact. In an example, 20 grams of hemp are mixed with 400 grams of viscose containing 10 per cent of cellulose and 1200 grams of crystalline decahydrated sodium sulphate; a quantity of the mixture is roughly moulded, inserted in a bed of gravel of an average diameter of 6 mm. and pressure is applied to incrust the gravel in the surface; the viscose in the mass is coagulated and fixed in the usual manner, and the incrusted gravel then dislodged.
