Abstract

445,141. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London..-(Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Electrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) March 21, 1935, No. 8860. [Class 39 (i)] In a high-pressure, metal-vapour discharge lamp having at least one thermionic electrode, which is independently heated at starting but is during normal working-at least in main part-heated by the discharge, this electrode being composed of a number of portions 4, 5-directly or indirectly heated-with their heater elements in parallel as described in Specification 432,950, the elements are arranged one behind the other along the direction of the discharge. The filling may be a rare gas with sodium. The portions of one electrode are given different constitutions so that one part is at first more effective than the other; one may be smaller than the other, or a resistance 6 may be included in a heater circuit, or different emitting surfaces may be used so that the cathode falls are unequal. The portions 4, 5 consist of rods of alkaline earth surrounded by tungsten spirals. The envelope is enclosed in an outer thermally insulated tube. According to the Provisional Specification the heater circuits are disconnected after starting.
