444,510. Plug or lever-lids for cans &c. BARLOW, R., Queen's House, Kingsway, London, and COWAN, A. F., 48, Barnfield Avenue, Shirley, Surrey. Jan. 31, 1935, No. 3173. [Class 125 (iii)] A plug or inside fitting lid for a can or like container comprises a cylindrical wall 1, Fig. 1, by which it frictionally closures the can, a flange 5 at the top of the wall, and an inwardly extending groove 3 disposed in the wall 1 beneath the flange 5, the latter being depressed at one or more places 9, Fig. 4, to form stops which engage the mouth of the can and space the lid therefrom so that an opening tool such as a coin inserted in the groove is disposed inside the wall of the can 2 and the cylindrical wall 1. The can wall is beaded at 4 while the flange 5 is provided with an outward peripheral curl 6. The lid may be corrugated concentrically while the can body may be grooved inwardly at 8 to form a seating for the lid. To ensure an even seating, the flange 5 is formed with three depressions 10 forming stops 9. If desired, the lid may be hinged to the can body, a hinge pin 11 on the can, Fig. 5, co-operating with a curl 12 on the lid formed preferably where the flange is displaced to act as a stop. In alternative forms, the hinge pin is formed by slotting the can wall, or the flange above the groove 3 may be inwardly curled at 15, Fig. 7. A rubber ring or other sealing medium may be provided in the groove 3, or in a second groove formed in the wall 1 preferably at its lower edge, to form a hermetic seal.
