Abstract

A friction material for brakes, clutches &c. comprises a fibrous basic substance such as asbestos and 5-20 per cent by weight of a finely powdered metal free from graphite the melting or softening point of which is higher than that produced by friction, for example copper, aluminium or alloys containing these metals, the powdered metal being finely distributed through the mass of the basic substance so that the fibres are covered therewith and the mixture being consolidated by a binding agent such as 10-30 per cent of a synthetic resin. As an example 10 parts of finely divided asbestos, 1 part of wood flour and 1 part of aluminium or copper dust are mixed together and to this 1 to 3 parts of a synthetic resin are added. The mixture is kneaded, pressed into moulds and hardened by pressure and heat. The metal may be pulverized by the Schoop process.
