Abstract
<PICT:0444142/IV/1> <PICT:0444142/IV/2> <PICT:0444142/IV/3> Hanks or skeins, particularly of artificial silk, are dyed or dressed by passing them in a zigzag or sinuous path through a bath while supported at their ends on two supporting rods or bars which are detachably mounted at their ends on chains or similar means, the wheels where the chains change direction being of small diameter in comparison with the space between the supporting bars so as to permit the skein to float and change its position of contact with the supporting bars. One of the supporting bars for the skeins may, as shown at 21, Fig. 4, be secured to the chains of the conveyer by springs which apply a slight tension to the skein. Elastic arms 22, 23, Fig. 3, carrying small bars or rods at their ends may be provided on one or both of the supporting bars 20, 21 to open out the skeins at their central part and oppose ravelling. The conveyer chains 11 are supported on pinions 16, 16<1> on the sides of the vat and carry the skeins between co-operating rollers 12, 13 which apply pressure. These rollers are periodically separated by rotation of a shaft 55 which, by means of opposite screwthreads 53, 54, as shown, moves the roller bearings apart.
