Abstract

<PICT:0443674/III/1> In producing oleum by the absorption of sulphur trioxide in sulphuric acid, the downwardly flowing acid is brought into contact with gases comprising sulphur trioxide at first in a finely divided state without cooling and finally while cooling by contact with the inner surface of a bundle of vertical cooled tubes. As shown, sulphuric acid enters the absorber at g and passes down first through a column of ring-shaped filler bodies d resting on some layers of balls c and then through vertical externally cooled tubes b. Gases containing sulphur trioxide are introduced at h. The spent gases leave at k while the oleum formed leaves the tower at i. The tubes b are cooled by cooling liquid circulating through the chamber n. The tower and the supporting grate for the filler bodies may be lined with ceramic material. Cooling water or brine which has been treated to make it non-corrosive may be circulated through the chamber n, this cooling medium being itself cooled by means of available water in another cooler.
