Abstract

In a process for absorbing sulphur trioxide in concentrated sulphuric acid, the gas and liquid are fed downwardly between cooled concentric cylinders 4 and 5 spaced apart between 1/8 and 1/2 an inch and the resulting product is rapidly cooled after it has left the space between the cylinders. Rapid cooling may be effected by passage through a large heat exchanger or as shown by mixing with cooled product introduced at 6 from a channel 9. The sulphur trioxide, preferably diluted with air so that the mixture contains e.g. 4% by volume sulphur trioxide is passed upwardly through the inner cylinder 4 and 98% sulphuric acid is fed to the absorption space through lines 1 and 2. The temperature in the absorption space is controlled at between 80-100 DEG F. <PICT:1107319/C1/1> by returning a portion of the rapidly cooled product to the top of the absorber. The cylinders 4 and 5 are double-walled and cooling liquid is circulated therethrough.
