Abstract
Products useful as textile assistants, e.g. as foaming agents are obtained by substituting an alkyl or aralkyl residue for the hydrogen atom of the NH group of an amidine which is derived from a primary ortho or peri diamine and is substituted at the m carbon atom by an aliphatic or hydroaromatic residue containing at least 8 carbon atoms. The substitution may be effected by treating the amidines with alkylating or aralkylating agents or the diamines used as parent material for the synthesis may already contain the alkyl or aralkyl residue attached to the nitrogen. The alkyl and aralkyl residues introduced may contain hydroxyl or halogen. In examples : (1) m -heptadecylbenzimidazole is heated with ethyl or allyl bromide or methyl, ethyl or butyl chloride ; (2) a mixture of m -pentadecyl- and heptadecylbenzimidazoles, obtainable from stearic acid and ortho phenylenediamine is heated with dimethylsulphate or benzyl chloride ; (3) m -heptadecenyl-benzimidazole obtained from olive oil and ortho phenylenediamine is heated with ethylene oxide or ethylenechlorhydrin ; (4) a mixture of benzimidazoles prepared from hydrogenated fish oil and ortho phenylenediamine is treated with ethylenechlorhydrin ; (5) m -heptadecyl-benzimidazole is heated with a -glycerinchlorhydrin or monochloracetic acid ; (6) a mixture of benzimidazoles derived from ortho phenylenediamine and hydrogenated fish oil, olive oil and coconut oil is heated with a mixture of glycerinchlorhydrin and ethylenechlorhydrin. The products may be used for the manufacture of sulphonic acids according to the processes described in Specifications 403,977 and 419,010.
