Abstract

Textile assistants stated to be useful as wetting, emulsifying and softening agents are prepared by treating with ethylene oxide an amine NR<1>R<11>R<111> in which R<1> stands for an alkyl radicle having a chain of from 8--20 carbon atoms, R<11> stands for hydrogen or an alkyl radicle with not more than 4 carbon atoms and R<111> stands for a polyhydroxyalkyl radicle. The nitrogen and hydroxy groups of the products may be acylated and esterified, respectively, by means of fatty acids. In examples : (1) N-cetyl-b : b <1> : b <11>-trihydroxy-tert-butylamine hydrobromide, which may be prepared by treating b : b <1> : b <11>-trihydroxy-tert-butylamine with cetylbromide, is treated with ethylene oxide ; (2) methylcetylglucamine, prepared by alkylating with cetylbromide, the product from glucose and methylamine is treated with ethylene oxide and condensed with stearic acid or stearic acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. According to the Provisional Specification, the products obtained on reacting with ethyleneoxide may be treated with sulphuric or phosphoric acid or submitted to alkylation or amination.ALSO:Products stated to be useful as emulsifying agents are prepared by treating with ethyleneoxide an amine NR<1>R<11>R<111> in which R<1> stands for an alkyl radicle having a chain of from 8--20 carbon atoms, R<11> stands for hydrogen or an alkyl radicle with not more than 4 carbon atoms, and R<11> stands for a polyhydroxyalkyl radicle. In examples, N-cetyl-b : b <1> : b <11>-trihydroxy-tert-butylamine hydrobromide and methylcetylglycamine are treated with ethylene oxide. Stearic acid may be used in the final step of acylation and esterification. According to the Provisional Specification, products with similar products may be obtained by alkylating or aminating the products of the reaction with ethyleneoxide or by treating them with sulphuric or phosphoric acid.
