443,241. Stretching webs transversely. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd., Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex.- (Assignees of Lewis, A. P.) Aug. 24, 1934, No. 24471. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1933. [Class 100 (i)] A device for stretching webs transversely comprises a roller over which the web passes and provided with a number of units having rubber web - engaging edges adapted to be deformed by the pressure of the web and thus to urge the material laterally both ways from its centre. As shown in Fig. 2, two forms of stretching unit, composed wholly of rubber, are mounted on a shaft 15 adapted to be rotated by the pull of the web. The central units 16 comprise a hub 16d, Fig. 5, and a frusto-conical webengaging portion 16b connected to the hub by a web 16<c>. The end units 17 comprise a hub 17d, Fig. 4, and a number of radial web-engaging arms 17b provided with serrated edges 17<c>. The hubs are provided with lugs 17f on one side and slots 17<e> for locking the units together with the arms 17b in staggered relationship. The edges of the web-engaging portions 16b, 17b extend beyond the ends of the hubs so as to overlap adjacent units. A central plain cylindrical member may be employed instead of the units 16.
